Wacona Elementary WINGS Students Participate in Iditarod Quilt Project

Fifth grade WINGS students at Wacona Elementary participated in the Iditarod Quilt Project. The Iditarod is an annual dog sled race that occurs in Alaska on the Iditarod Trail. Schools that participate in the Iditarod Quilt Project receive one of a number of patchwork quilts that travel across the nation, teaching students about the race. The quilt Wacona Elementary students received will also travel to schools in Maine, Kentucky, South Carolina, California, Indiana, Florida, and Colorado.

After learning about the Iditarod and viewing the quilt, students create their own class quilt piece that will be used in making a new quilt that will travel the world next year. They also contribute to a scrapbook page in a notebook that travels along with the quilt. The Iditarod Quilt Project culminated in reading Woodsong by Gary Paulsen, which is an account of Paulsen's experiences competing in the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race.  Wacona Elementary's Principal is John Chancey.
