The Ware County Lady Gators returned to action Monday, October 5, taking on the Brunswick Lady Pirates at The Miracle League of Okefenokee Field in Waycross. Despite outhitting Brunswick eight to seven, the Lady Gators were unable to overcome a productive middle portion of the game by the Lady Pirates and fell 8-5.

Ware County found itself trailing 1-0 before answering in the bottom of the third inning. Teriayn Kirkland delivered an RBI single down the right-field line, and another run crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the Lady Gators a 2-1 advantage.

Brunswick responded in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to regain the lead at 4-2. The Lady Pirates continued to apply pressure and eventually built an 8-2 advantage.

The Lady Gators refused to go quietly.

Ware County's offense came alive again in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a pair of home runs. Kirkland drove a two-run homer over the right-field fence, and Addi Pittman followed with a solo shot to right to help pull Ware County back within three at 8-5.

Kirkland led the Lady Gators offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Pittman, Kirkland and Mattie Forsyth each finished with two hits as Ware County collected eight hits as a team.

Kirkland also handled the majority of the work in the circle for Ware County. She pitched six and one-third innings, allowing six hits and four runs, only two of which were earned, while striking out seven and walking three.

Brunswick finished with seven hits and took advantage of its opportunities on the bases and at the plate. The Lady Pirates drew six walks, stole five bases and turned two double plays defensively.

Although the final score went in Brunswick's favor, Ware County continued to battle throughout the contest and generated several encouraging offensive moments, including the two fifth-inning home runs.
