The Ware County Lady Gators and Statesboro Lady Blue Devils went back and forth Thursday evening at Gator Field, with both teams having their turn in front during a Region 1-AAAAA battle. When the final out was recorded, Statesboro came away with a 12-7 victory.
Ware County got off to a good start and held a 3-0 advantage through the first two innings. The Lady Gators put their first run on the board in the opening frame when Addi Pittman brought a runner home, then added two more in the second.
Statesboro responded in the third, scoring four runs to take its first lead of the night. Ware County answered in the bottom half when Mattie Forsyth brought home the tying run, making it 4-4 after three innings.
The back-and-forth continued in the fourth.
Statesboro moved ahead 6-4 in the top half, but the Lady Gators came right back with three runs of their own. Teriayn Kirkland, Reagan Middleton and Pittman each came through with RBI hits as Ware County regained the lead, 7-6.
The Lady Blue Devils tied the game at seven in the fifth and moved back in front with another run in the sixth. Statesboro eventually added some insurance and closed out the night with the 12-7 win.
Ware County produced 10 hits in the game. Cassidy Lee, Genesis Walker and Middleton each finished with two hits, while Pittman drove in a team-high two runs.
Middleton started in the circle for the Lady Gators and worked three innings, striking out four. Kirkland handled the final four innings and recorded six strikeouts without allowing a walk. Together, the two Ware County pitchers finished the night with 10 strikeouts.
Statesboro finished with 14 hits as the Lady Blue Devils were able to take advantage of their opportunities during the later innings.
Although the final score went Statesboro’s way, Ware County showed plenty of fight throughout the evening. The Lady Gators responded several times after falling behind and held a 7-6 lead after four innings before the Lady Blue Devils made their late push.
