The Ware County Gator Football program took on Camden County at two different locations Thursday, September 10, with the 9th Grade Gators hosting the Wildcats at Memorial Stadium while the Junior Varsity Gators made the trip to Camden County.
Weather prevented the 9th Grade contest from reaching its conclusion in Waycross, but down the road in Camden County, the JV Gators put together an impressive all-around performance to earn a 34-14 victory over the Wildcats at Chris Gilman Stadium.
Weather Halts 9th Grade Contest at Memorial Stadium
The 9th Grade Gators welcomed Camden County to Memorial Stadium for their scheduled matchup Thursday afternoon.
The teams were able to complete the first half before lightning and inclement weather moved into the area. Play was suspended, and the game was ultimately unable to resume.
While the younger Gators had their night cut short by Mother Nature, Ware County's JV squad was able to complete its business on the road.
JV Gators Make Plays in All Three Phases
Ware County's JV squad used a relentless defensive effort, timely special-teams play and several explosive offensive moments to take control against Camden County.
The Gators made their presence felt early on special teams. Quez Jenkins provided the first major spark when Ware County blocked a Camden County punt and Jenkins turned the loose football into a touchdown.
Special teams continued to play an important role throughout the night. Hayes Sweat handled the placekicking, punting and kickoff responsibilities for Ware County, helping the Gators control field position and maintain momentum.
Offensively, the Gators found multiple ways to create big plays.
Quarterback Kieran Brown connected with Brodie Burchett for a touchdown through the air. Brown later delivered one of the biggest plays of the night when Ware County faced a critical fourth down. Brown escaped the Camden County defense, broke free on a long scramble and took it all the way to the end zone for another Gator touchdown.
Defense Creates Opportunities
Ware County's defense did its part throughout the evening, applying pressure, limiting Camden County's opportunities and creating turnovers at key moments.
Kam Clark came up with one of the biggest defensive plays of the night when he intercepted a Camden County pass inside the Wildcats' 5-yard line. The turnover immediately put the Gators in position to add points, and Justin Hampton finished the short drive with a touchdown run.
The Ware County rushing attack provided another spark when Daniel Tripp broke free for a long run that helped set up another Gator scoring opportunity.
Later, Ryder Gilbert connected with Quintin Powell for a touchdown pass, adding another explosive play to an already productive night and helping Ware County put the finishing touches on the 34-14 victory.
The win was a complete team effort for the JV Gators, with contributions coming from throughout the roster. Ware County produced difference-making plays on offense, defense and special teams while taking advantage of opportunities when they presented themselves.
From Jenkins' special-teams touchdown and Clark's interception to Brown's dual-threat performance and touchdowns from Burchett, Hampton and Powell, the Gators delivered in pivotal moments to secure an impressive road victory.
