The Ware County Lady Gators returned to Gator Field Tuesday afternoon for a non-region matchup with Appling County. The Lady Gators battled throughout the contest but were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to the Lady Pirates, 10-1.
Appling County struck first in the opening inning, using a pair of singles to take the early advantage. The Lady Pirates continued to add to their lead over the next several innings and held a 5-0 advantage by the top of the third.
Ware County continued to compete and put runners on base but had difficulty generating the big inning needed to cut into the Appling County lead.
Reagan Middleton handled the majority of the work in the circle for the Lady Gators, pitching six and one-third innings. She allowed 13 hits while surrendering nine runs, only five of which were earned. Middleton also recorded a strikeout and issued three walks.
Offensively, Ware County collected three hits in the contest. Middleton, Teriayn Kirkland and Mattie Forsyth each recorded a hit, with Forsyth driving in the Lady Gators' lone run. Ware County also turned a double play defensively.
Appling County finished the afternoon with 13 hits and took advantage of Ware County miscues to build its lead. The Lady Gators will look to put Tuesday's result behind them quickly with more softball coming up this week.
