The Ware County Lady Gators Volleyball team made the trip to Savannah on Tuesday, August 25, for a pair of matches, including an important Region 1 - AAAAA matchup against the Groves Lady Rebels and a non-region contest against the Appling County Lady Pirates.
The Lady Gators opened the evening with a strong performance against Groves, earning a straight-set region victory.
Ware County battled through a competitive opening set and came away with a 25 - 22 win. The Lady Gators then took control in the second set, cruising to a 25 - 9 victory to complete the sweep.
The win over Groves was an important one for Ware County as the Lady Gators continue their push through the Region 1-AAAAA schedule.
In the second match of the evening, Ware County faced Appling County in a hard-fought three-set battle.
Appling took the opening set 25-19, but the Lady Gators responded in the second. Ware County turned the tables and captured the second set by the identical 25-19 score, forcing a deciding third set.
The final set came down to the wire, with both teams battling point-for-point. The Lady Gators fought until the very end before Appling escaped with a narrow 16-14 victory to take the match.
Despite coming up just short against Appling, there were several strong individual performances for Ware County. Ariel Smith had an outstanding night from the service line, finishing with 98% of her serves made, while Mia Gonzalez came through with several crucial blocks at the net.
The Lady Gators leave Savannah with a valuable region victory and another competitive non-region match under their belts as they continue working and improving throughout the season.

There won't be much rest for the Lady Gators as they return to action Thursday, August 27, making the short trip to Tift County to take on the Blue Devils and the Pirates.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
