BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The Ware County Lady Gators hit the road Tuesday, August 18, for a varsity softball doubleheader against the Glynn Academy Lady Terrors in Brunswick. Ware County showed plenty of fight throughout the afternoon, including an explosive five-run inning in the nightcap, but Glynn Academy was able to take both games of the twin bill.
The Lady Terrors claimed the opener 8-0 before holding off a determined Ware County response to win Game 2, 14-6.
Game 1: Glynn Academy 8, Ware County 0
Glynn Academy grabbed an early advantage in the opening game and gradually built its lead over the next several innings.
The Lady Terrors pushed their first run across in the bottom of the first before adding three more in the second. Glynn Academy extended the margin again in the third and was able to keep Ware County from generating the big inning it needed to get back into the contest.
Despite the final score, the Lady Gators were able to put runners aboard against Glynn Academy pitching. Cassidy Lee, Natalie Pittman, Mattie Forsyth and Addi Pittman each recorded a hit for Ware County.
Teriayn Kirkland got the start in the circle for the Lady Gators and worked one and two-thirds innings. She surrendered only two hits and did not allow an earned run among the three runs charged during her outing. Kirkland also recorded two strikeouts.
Glynn Academy's ability to take advantage of opportunities and create pressure on the base paths proved to be a major factor in the opener, as the Lady Terrors finished with six stolen bases.
Game 2: Lady Gators' Bats Come Alive
Ware County's offense responded in a big way in the second game.
After Glynn Academy jumped ahead with four runs in the top of the first and added to its lead in the second, the Lady Gators answered with their biggest offensive inning of the doubleheader.
Ware County erupted for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Mattie Forsyth.
Forsyth's blast to center field gave the Lady Gators a much-needed spark and helped ignite the Ware County dugout. Teriayn Kirkland followed with an RBI single, while Kara Coleman delivered another big hit, driving home two runs.
The five-run frame demonstrated the fight of the Lady Gators as Ware County refused to allow Glynn Academy's early advantage to put the game away.
Kirkland led Ware County offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Coleman and Forsyth each finished with two RBIs, accounting for four of the Lady Gators' six runs.
Ware County also turned a double play defensively.
Glynn Academy, however, continued to produce offensively and finished the contest with 13 hits. The Lady Terrors also created additional scoring opportunities with their speed on the bases and eventually pulled away for the 14-6 victory.
Although the Lady Gators weren't able to bring home a victory from Brunswick, the second game provided several encouraging signs. Ware County showed the ability to respond after falling behind, strung together quality at-bats and produced a five-run inning against a Glynn Academy team that had controlled the opener.
The Lady Gators will look to build on those positives as they return home.
