The Ware County Lady Gators tennis team saw a remarkable 2026 season come to an end on Monday, May 4, falling 3-0 to Cambridge High School in the Elite Eight round of the GHSA Class AAAA State Tournament at the WCHS Tennis Complex.

Although the final score did not reflect the competitiveness on the courts, the Lady Gators battled throughout the afternoon against a talented Cambridge squad. At first singles, Bailey Denton was in strong position, claiming a 6-4 first set and carrying momentum into the second before her match was halted once the team result was decided. At third singles, Paislee Wildes was also in control, holding a set lead and appearing poised to secure a point.

Across the remaining courts, the Lady Gators continued to compete with determination and grit. Elly Blackrick, along with doubles teams Kayleigh LeMay and Gracie Vickers, and Addie Bishop and Ella Beth Cox, each faced tough matchups but represented Ware County with pride, effort, and resilience from start to finish.

While Monday’s result marks the end of the postseason run, it does not overshadow what has been a truly historic year for the program. The Lady Gators captured their first region championship in 34 years and advanced to the Elite Eight for just the second time in the past 16 years - milestones that reflect the growth and strength of the program.

With eight of ten varsity players expected to return, the future remains bright for Ware County. The experience gained this season, combined with a strong returning core, positions the Lady Gators to build on this success and continue competing at a high level in the years ahead.

Huge Congratulations to Coach Mooneyhan, his staff, and student athletes on a great season and post season.
