The second round of the GHSA AAAA Baseball State Playoffs has already delivered a little bit of everything - power hitting, dominant pitching, and a series that now comes down to one final game.
Game 1: Ware County’s Offensive Surge Powers Game One Win
Ware County opened the series with an explosive performance, pulling away late for a 19-6 win over Cartersville in a game that was far more competitive than the final score indicates.
Cartersville came out swinging early, launching a three-run homer in the first inning to grab momentum. Ware County responded in the third, stringing together key hits - including a go-ahead home run - to take their first lead of the night.
The Hurricanes briefly fought back, reclaiming a 6-5 advantage in the fourth, but that’s when the Gators took control for good.
Ware County erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning, fueled by clutch hitting and disciplined at-bats. The biggest moment came on a two-strike single that cleared the bases and shifted all momentum. The Gators followed that with another seven-run outburst in the sixth, putting the game out of reach.
Leading the charge was Slade Sweat, who delivered a standout performance with five runs driven in, highlighted by a three-run home run. Ware County’s lineup stayed aggressive and patient throughout, piling up hits, drawing walks, and applying pressure on the basepaths.
After a shaky start, the Gators’ pitching staff settled in, with the bullpen shutting things down and allowing the offense to take over.
Game 2: Cartersville Answers with Complete Game Shutout
Cartersville wasted no time bouncing back in Game 2, flipping the script entirely with a 6-0 shutout win to even the series.
The Hurricanes jumped ahead in the first inning with another three-run homer and added to their lead in the second with more power at the plate. That early advantage was all their pitcher needed.
Cartersville’s starter delivered a dominant, complete-game performance, allowing just three hits while striking out ten. Ware County struggled to generate any offensive rhythm, unable to string together hits or mount a serious scoring threat.
At the plate, Cartersville combined timely hitting with patience, drawing walks and consistently finding ways to keep innings alive.
Rubber Game Set in Cartersville
With both teams claiming a win, the series now comes down to a decisive Game 3. Ware County will again face Cartersville in the rubber game on Thursday, April 30, with the first pitch set for 5:00 PM.
Through two games, each team has shown a different path to victory - Ware County with its explosive offense and Cartersville with its ability to control the game from the mound.
