The Ware County Gators opened their Region 1-AAAA series at home on Monday, April 13, falling to Wayne County by a score of 4-2 at Gator Field despite a strong showing at the plate.

Ware County outhit the Yellow Jackets nine to six on the night, but timely hitting proved to be the difference. The visitors struck early in the top of the first inning, using a pair of extra-base and base hits to build a quick 2-0 advantage.

The Gators answered in the bottom of the third inning, evening the score at 2-2. A key base hit from Slade Sweat helped spark the rally, bringing Ware County back into the contest and energizing the home crowd.

On the mound, Seth Suess delivered a complete-game effort, working all seven innings while allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out six and issued just one walk, keeping the Gators within striking distance throughout the game.

After four innings of work from Wayne County’s starter, the Yellow Jackets turned to their bullpen, where their reliever proved to be the difference down the stretch. Ware County threatened with multiple hits but was unable to capitalize in the later innings.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh, when Wayne County regained the lead with a pair of runs to go ahead 4-2. Ware County was unable to answer in the bottom half, leaving runners on base as the final outs were recorded.

Offensively, the Gators were led by Seth Suess, Collin Crawford, and Landon Smallwood, who each collected two hits. Sweat and Smallwood each drove in a run for Ware County in the loss.

Ware County will continue the three-game Region 1-AAAA series with a road trip to Wayne County on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM. The series will conclude on Thursday, April 16, back at Gator Field with a 6:00 PM start.
