The Ware County Gators Junior Varsity Baseball team made the short trip to Jesup on Thursday, March 12, 2026, for a matchup with the Wayne County Yellow Jackets, and the contest turned into a back-and-forth thriller that wasn’t decided until the final play. Despite a strong offensive performance and outhitting the home team, the Gators fell just short in a 10 - 9 walk-off loss.
Wayne County struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue to plate two runs and take an early lead. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the second inning on an RBI single to center field, extending the advantage to 3 - 0.
The home team continued to build momentum in the third inning, adding two more runs on RBI singles to move ahead 5 - 0. However, the Gators continued to battle and slowly worked their way back into the game with timely hitting and aggressive baserunning.
Ware County’s biggest surge came in the fifth inning when the offense came alive. Brayden Tanner delivered an RBI single, and Brodie Burchett followed with a clutch double that drove in two runs, helping the Gators claim a 6 - 5 lead.
Wayne County answered in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a few opportunities to even the score at 9 - 9 heading into the final frame. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when the Yellow Jackets were able to push across the winning run on a sacrifice fly to secure the walk-off victory.
Offensively, Ware County put together an impressive performance at the plate, finishing the game with 13 hits. Tanner had a standout day, going 3 - for - 4 with three RBIs while anchoring the middle of the lineup. Burchett also collected three hits, helping keep the Gator offense rolling throughout the contest.
Hayes Sweat and Chaden Carter each added multiple hits as Ware County consistently put runners on base. The Gators also showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks in the game. Brayden Davis and Ryder Kinnon each recorded two walks.
Ware County was aggressive on the basepaths, swiping seven stolen bases, with Ashton Suess leading the effort with two steals.
On the mound, Brayden Davis started the game for the Gators and struck out three batters across three innings of work. Jaccheus Cooper provided relief late in the game, recording two strikeouts during his appearance.
Although the final result did not fall in their favor, the Gators showed resilience throughout the contest, battling back from an early deficit and putting themselves in position to win late.
