The Ware County Gators opened the 2026 season with a solid early test, hosting the Effingham County Rebels Thursday night at Gator Field. In a scrimmage that featured plenty of learning moments, Ware County dropped a 6 - 4 decision while getting a long look at its depth on the mound and flashes of offensive pop.
Offensively, the Gators were sparked by extra-base hits from senior Walker Hudson and junior Eli Watkins, each driving the ball with authority as Ware County looked to generate momentum against a veteran Rebels squad.
On the hill, the Gators used the scrimmage to evaluate multiple arms. Juniors Tanner Larisey, Keaton Holloway, Eli Watkins, and senior Seth Suess all logged innings, while sophomores Lucas Howard, Trace Crosby, and Ryder Kinnon gained valuable varsity experience. The mix-and-match approach allowed the coaching staff to assess roles and situational execution heading into opening week.
While the result went Effingham’s way, the scrimmage provided exactly what Ware County needed—game-speed reps, lineup experimentation, and clarity on areas to tighten up. The Gators will focus on cleaning up a few mistakes as they turn the page to the official season opener.
Ware County officially opens the 2026 campaign on the road Tuesday, February 10, traveling to face Lowndes County in Valdosta. First pitch is set for 5:30 PM.
