The Ware County Gator Wrestling team traveled to Colquitt County High School on Saturday, January 3, 2025, to compete in the annual Packer Duals, continuing their dual tournament schedule with a strong showing against top competition from across South Georgia. Competing in a highly competitive field, the Gators finished 4th overall in the Packer Classic.
Ware County opened the day with an impressive 3 - 1 record in pool play, showcasing depth and determination throughout the lineup. The Gators earned convincing victories over Lowndes (50 - 29), Cook (63 - 18), and Lee County (52 - 22). Their lone pool loss came against a tough Valdosta squad by a score of 28 - 49, placing Ware County into the third-place match.
In the 3rd place dual against Thomas County Central, the Gators were locked in a back-and-forth battle that came down to the smallest of margins. Ware County ultimately fell 42 - 41, with the match decided on criteria after the Gators were forced to forfeit two weight classes compared to one forfeit by TCC. Despite the narrow loss, the dual was a testament to the grit and competitiveness of the Gators heading into the postseason stretch.
Three Gators stood out with exceptional performances on the day. Jaden McKelvin, Aaron Bennett, and Gunter Fore were named Wrestlers of the Day, each finishing a perfect 5 - 0. All three recorded multiple pinfalls, with every victory earning bonus points for the team.
The Gators will now turn their attention to their next competition on Tuesday, January 6, 2025, as Ware County travels to Fitzgerald for a tri-meet with Fitzgerald and Toombs County. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
Go Gators!
