The Ware County Gators Cross Country teams hit the ground running this past Saturday, August 16, 2025, as they traveled to Hazlehurst to compete in the Peach State Preview hosted by Jeff Davis. Facing tough competition and challenging summer heat, both the boys and girls teams showed grit and determination in their season opener.

Boys Team
The boys squad placed 14th overall in the team standings, with a solid pack finish leading the way. Sophomore Brock Payne paced the Gators, finishing 74th with a time of 21:15. Just seconds behind, Damarion Zanders (12) crossed in 21:24 for 79th, followed closely by Lorenzo Harris (11) in 21:38 (86th) and Wesley Frye (12) in 21:40 (87th). Freshman Damari Bennett rounded out the top five, finishing 106th with a 22:33 effort.

Additional strong performances came from Silas Mixon (23:36), Giovanni S. (25:06), Ashton Stormant (26:31), Seth King (27:11), Jax Yarger (29:20), and Jameson Addison (41:16). The depth of the team will serve the Gators well as the season progresses.

Girls Team
The Lady Gators showed tremendous toughness in the heat, gaining valuable experience in their first meet of the season. Junior Millie Bennett led the way with a 31:58 finish, placing 106th overall. She was followed by Faith Williams (11) in 33:49 (114th) and freshman Bronwyn Bennett in 34:44 (116th).

While the girls’ squad faced tough conditions, their effort and perseverance were evident as they worked together to build momentum for the races ahead.

Looking Ahead


With the first meet under their belts, both the Gators and Lady Gators have a foundation to build on as they continue to train and improve throughout the fall season. Coaches and teammates alike are proud of the effort shown this weekend and look forward to seeing continued progress.
