This summer, some local parents have taken time out from their busy schedules each week in order to study a foreign language.  For these parents and their families, their foreign language is English!   The parents have been attending a weekly English class at Williams Heights, where their children attend during the school year.  All of the class members can speak some English at various levels of proficiency, and they have the desire to improve their speaking, reading, listening, and writing of the language.    The parents’ class is led by Williams Heights teacher, Sharon Pinder.  Other Williams Heights staff members/friends Heather Thigpen, Anna Pinder, and Stacy Bates, lead the children’s group so that the parents can focus all their attention on learning and improving their English.
The parents spend time in conversation and question/answer sessions, and they work in the computer lab on systematic, research-based programs that teach the English language.  Meanwhile, the children work in various educational computer programs, reinforcing their knowledge of English as well.  About half their time is spent in the lab, and the other half is spent on the playground or in the gym, taking a needed break from their studies while practicing English conversation as they play.
The parents are appreciative of the opportunity to learn and improve, and they are eager each week to increase their knowledge and interact with other parents who are learning.  Principal Dr. Lance Brantley remarked, “I am excited about this English class program, and happy that Williams Heights can provide this summer class for our parents and children." Many cultures are represented among Williams Heights’ student body, including Indian, Latin American, Vietnamese, Chinese, and South American.  The children have a rich blend of traditions and languages in their families, but they have all become proficient in the English language and achieved success in school.  Now, with this English class at Williams Heights, their parents can take advantage of the chance to increase their mastery of the English language as well.  For more information about the summer English class, contact Williams Heights Elementary at spinder@ware.k12.ga.us or 287-2399.
