Did you know that the citizens of Waycross have a very important
hand in helping to make a positive impact on our environment? Well,
students at Waresboro Elementary made that discovery recently.
Waresboro Elementary third grade teachers, Mrs. Heather Harper, Mrs.
Tami Highsmith, and Mrs. Dawn Rouse helped their students make real
world connections to their environmental science standards recently
with a visit to the Waycross Water Control Plant. The students were
amazed at the processes involved in the treatment of waste water as
it is recycled back into clean river water. The students were given
an opportunity to view the “good” bacteria that are an important
step in cleaning the waste water and saw how important it is to be
careful of what one puts into the waste water that is difficult to
clean out.
Mr. Jeff Buchanan and Mr. Terry Sweat led the
students through a tour of the facility with explanations of each
process. The students enthusiastically participated in the
discussions and made connections to prior learning in the classroom
of how important it is for all citizens to protect the environment
and to make certain not to introduce harmful chemicals into the
water supply.
The students were also able to view the litter
trap that has been installed at the mouth of a Satilla River
tributary that traps paper and other solids people leave on the
ground and throw into the streets of Waycross. They were able to
understand how littering impacts the environment right here in their
own city and were glad to know that the city of Waycross was willing
to invest in the one of only two such litter traps in the nation.
Following the visit to the water treatment plant, the students
and teachers visited the Agricultural Science and Health Care Career
Centers at the Ware County High School to further their knowledge of
the scientific impact of the protection of our environment and how
we can protect our natural resources and ourselves. Mrs. Marcie
Johnson and Mrs. Dawn Solomon’s students engaged the third graders
in some hands-on experiments and instructional discussions of germs
and how important keeping their environment safe from “bad” bacteria
is to themselves and others. Mr. Danny Bartlett’s students shared
how they are contributing to the environment through their efforts
to create biofuels in the lab to cur down on fuel emissions into the
air. The students were able to see how they must work hard in third
grade to be able to choose a career path in agricultural science or
the health fields.
Principal Susan Newman and Waresboro’s
third grade would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Medea
Shuman, Ware County High School’s CTAE director, and Mr. Carlos
Jaimie, Waycross Television program director, for coordinating the
field trip.
