Kathy Harbuck Cox is President of Women Band Directors International
 
 

 
Kathy Harbuck Cox, director of bands at Ware County Middle School was recently installed as President of the Women Band Directors International. A 1978 graduate of Northside High School in Warner Robins, GA, Mrs. Cox received her Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1982 from Troy State University. She returned to Troy for her Masters Degree, which she completed in 1985.
In her 21st year of teaching, Mrs. Cox taught for 2 years at Calvary Baptist Day School in Savannah, GA then moved to Waycross, GA where she has remained for the past 19 years. Her students have consistently earned high ratings in band festivals as well as solo/ensemble festivals.
Active in the GA Music Educators Association, she has served for many years as the treasurer of District Eight, as organizer of the 8th District 6th Grade All-district Band since the late 1980's, and as the host for district festivals and all-state band first round auditions. She has conducted clinics and has been a guest conductor in Georgia, Alabama, and at the Western Jamaica International Music Festival. She is also a member of Tau Beta Sigmamusic fraternity. Ms. Cox joined the Women Band Directors National Association shortly after beginning her teaching career.
She served as the Recording Secretary from 1996-2000, during which the organization officially became Women Band Directors International. She then served the organization as Vice President from 2000-2002, then as President Elect from 2002-2004. Her term of President will be 2004-2006, after which she will serve a 2 year term as Immediate Past President. Past presidents then remain active members of the executive board for life. In 1998, Mrs. Cox was named the recipient of the Silver Baton Award from the WBDI. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to music education, music in the community, and service to music organizations.
Along with teaching middle school band, Mrs. Cox is the assistant director of music at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waycross. She is also an original member of Waycross Brass, a community Brass Ensemble that performs for civic clubs, church groups, and for various concerts in the parks of Waycross. She was also director of the Waycross Area Community Theater Orchestra for 5 years.
