Mrs. Penny Deems Journal Writing
In Mrs. Penny Deems’ first grade classroom at Ware Magnet, journal writing is a common occurrence. To ensure that students are correctly utilizing the writing process, Mrs. Deems utilizes a scaffolding strategy that has improved her students’ writing. When the same writing problems occur in a student’s journal writing, Mrs. Deems writes a reminder in the journal of a step/s in the writing process the student needs to remember prior to checking it. When each student turns in his/her journal, she asks, “Did you check the reminder/s in front of your journal?” The results have been quite successful!! Mrs. Deems continues to use this strategy and finds it to be more effective than pasting a copy of the writing process inside her students’ journals.
