The following measures need to be taken by ALL Internet users:

  1. Do NOT download ANY Internet explorer "helper" programs.  These are programs like AntiVirus 2008 or AntiVirus 2009, hotbar, search bar, my web search, save now, any shopping helpers, games, wildtangent, web rebates, best offers, sidesearch, weatherbug, date manager, gator, precision time, e-anthology, winfixer, etc.  If you have a lot of pop-ups, let us know on the technology report and we will remove them.  Do not use winfixer.
  2. Do NOT download any programs at all.  There are FEW EXCEPTIONS.  Programs like Google toolbar, Windows updates, Sophos virus updates, updates to legitimate programs that the BOE owns, downloads from legitimate educational websites, United Streaming, Acrobat Reader, QuickTime, Shockwave and the like are OK.  Consult your technology mentor, technology specialist, or media specialist if you have questions.
  3. Do NOT forward "cute", "fun", "inspirational", or "joke" emails.  This is a business owned computer, not your personal computer.
  4. NEVER forward messages about a new killer virus that can't be cleaned and will destroy your hard drive. To date, all of these have been hoaxes.  You may contact the technology department and we'll determine if it is a legitimate message.  Microsoft, McAfee, and Symantec do not send bulk emails about such threats.
  5. Do not download Incredimail.  You are at risk of losing all your mail if we have to re-image or replace the hard drive on your machine because we cannot recover Incredimail files.  Do not download any file sharing programs.
  6. Backup any important files.  You most likely will lose your files if we have to re-image or replace your hard drive.  Keep a copy of anything important on a USB jump drive, on floppies, or IF you have a unique login name, you can save to the U: drive.
  7. Make sure that your virus protection is up to date; if it is not and you need assistance, write it up on the technology report.
  8. Install Windows Updates when prompted to do so.

NEVER DOWNLOAD ANY PEER-to-PEER FILE SHARING PROGRAMS!
It is illegal to share copyrighted material and doing so could result in criminal prosecution.  Examples are:  Ares,KaaZaa, BearShare, Limewire, Morpheous, etc.

If you have any questions, please contact the technology department.
