In the dawning hours of a recent October morning, students, teachers, and parents recently gathered so they could walk together to Williams Heights Elementary. Approximately 150 students joined their teachers and classmates in celebration of International Walk to School Day. Teachers and administrators were already there waiting, as parents walked their children to one of the three meeting sites. The children put on their “glow bracelets” and were reminded of safety rules as they prepared to walk together in the early morning.
The idea behind International Walk to School Day is to celebrate the simple joys of walking to school. That goal certainly seemed to be met as the students were enthusiastic and joyful as they walked with teachers watchfully leading their walking groups across town to the Williams Heights schoolyard. Ashlynn Jordan, faculty sponsor of the Walk to School, remarked, “It was a great experience to join children and adults in celebrating International Walk to School Day.” Mrs. Smallwood stated, “We love providing this experience for our students. It was a beautiful morning and the students were excited.”
