Wacona Elementary Supports Mattie's Mission

Why did the chicken cross the hallway? To collect more money for Mattie’s Mission! September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Wacona’s National Elementary Honor Society pitched in to raise money for Mattie’s Mission.

NJHS students came up with the Pucker Face Challenge, in which they selected 9 teachers to suck on a fresh lemon; their picture was taken immediately afterward to “capture the moment.” The pictures were then posted on jars. All the students voted for their favorite pucker face by dropping change into the jar of their choice.

After “winning” the contest, 4th grade teacher Mrs. Lacey Gruver donned the yellow chicken suit and clucked her way through the halls of Wacona to the tune of the Chicken Dance song. Accompanying her were 4th grade students Logan and Maddox, the current president of Wacona’s chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society. Logan donated $100 of his own money in memory of his good friend Mattie Goble. He was the Gold Star Donor. Wacona students collected a total of $700 that was donated to Mattie’s Mission. John Chancey is the principal of Wacona Elementary.
