Fire Safety Field Trip Helps DAFFODIL Students Learn to Stay Cool

DAFFODIL students recently went on their yearly excursion to Waycross Fire Station #1, where they were greeted by firefighters who quickly got down to business showing students how to stay safe. The students were presented a puppet show with songs that gave an entertaining educational message on fire safety. During the puppet show, fire fighters gave short demonstrations on staying away from matches, having a smoke alarm, and seeing what a fire fighter looks like in full uniform.

Firefighters also demonstrated how to stop, drop, and roll and then gave students the opportunity to perform this important activity on mats under a sheet that imitated smoke. Each student was allowed to spray the fire hose under the guidance of the firefighters. Students were also shown the firefighters' living quarters when they are on call.

The firefighters delighted the students with fire hats, coloring books, crayons, and a ruler to take home to reinforce what they had learned. According to DAFFODIL teacher Mrs. Robyn Cuneo, “My students’ favorite part of the field trip was spraying the water hose!”
