Waresboro Elementary Holds NEHS Induction Ceremony

Waresboro Elementary recently held its National Elementary Honor Society Induction Ceremony, during which 35 students received the prestigious honor of being recognized for their scholarship, responsibility, leadership, service and grade point average.

The theme Kindness echoed throughout this year’s ceremony. Sarah Thrift Bowman, former Waresboro Eagle who is currently employed with Unison Behavioral Health as APEX Coordinator and Counselor for the Child and Adolescent Program, delivered the keynote speech. Sarah’s moving speech stressed the importance of not only good grades and hard work but how important it is to be kind. Sarah told students that she was taught from a young age that no one likes to be alone, your own name is the sweetest name you’ll ever hear, and that everyone should be treated equally. Sarah also challenged the students by stating, “Every day when you wake up, you have the choice of being kind. Ask yourself, what can I do today to show kindness to someone else?”

Current NEHS members spoke of the qualities that one must possess as a member. Inductees then took their membership pledge, and the ceremony concluded with the traditional lighting of the candles representing scholarship, responsibility, leadership, and service. Among those in attendance to celebrate this achievement were many parents, grandparents, educators and former retired educators.

NEHS members are led by advisors Lisa Thrift and Cindy Thrift. Dr. Jenny Barnes stated in her closing remarks that she is always so proud of the National Elementary Honor Society inductees for their academic achievement, but urged them to be remembered for more than good grades.
