Wacona Elementary Robotics Students Win 2nd Place at State Technology Competition

Five Wacona Elementary students competed at the State Technology Competition in Macon, GA earlier this month, and two of the students returned to Waycross with a silver 2nd place medal hanging around their necks. Cody G. and Evan P. advanced to the state level of competition after securing first place wins at both the system and district technology competitions earlier this year. Both students are members of Wacona's robotics team and have worked hard building their robot and programming it to be teleoperated, that is, working autonomously, using a program called ModKit. Cody and Evan explained to the judges how they programmed each of the four motors separately, then broadcasted each movement to the robot brain in the order in which the movements needed to be performed.  They had to debug and revise the program several times, taking exact measurements and calculating speed for their robot to perform designated tasks. That's no small feat!

Other students competing at state include Titi L., Ashlyn J., and Vinnie K. Titi competed in Graphic Design for 3rd and 4th graders, and Ashlyn and Vinnie teamed up to compete in Robotics for 3rd and 4th graders. Wacona principal, John Chancey, is very proud of all of these students' accomplishments in robotics, programming, and graphic design this year.
