Center Elementary Students Participate in First-Ever Econ Games

Seven Center Elementary students, along with their team advisors Mrs. Shelly Cox and Dr. Reba Smith, competed in the inaugural Econ Games competition sponsored by The Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE). Center was represented by a 4th grade and a 5th grade team at the competition, which was held at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center in Tifton, Georgia.

The Econ Games is a competitive event designed to engage and inspire 4th and 5th grade students to develop a stronger interest in economics, entrepreneurship, and personal finance. Students competed in three different rounds of competition. In Round 1 - Productivity, student teams produced a set of products with a certain amount of time. In Round 2 - Standards Assessment, each student took a 15-question multiple choice test based on the performance standards for their grade level. In Round 3 - Entrepreneurship, student teams created a good or service that solves a problem. The teams created a poster and one-minute commercial that they delivered live for a group of judges, who then questioned them.

Each student received a t-shirt and a certificate of participation. Mr. Tyler A. Bennett, principal at Center Elementary, stated, “I cannot thank our school advisors, Dr. Reba Smith and Mrs. Shelly Cox, enough for working with our students and preparing them for the Econ Games! Dr. Smith and Mrs. Cox are truly great educators who are preparing our students to be lifelong and creative thinkers and learners. I also could not be more proud of our students in how they competed and performed on their teams. I was a proud principal at the level of thinking and creativity that they were able to display in the rounds, and I was glad that I attended and witnessed the remarkable performance of both of our student teams in the entrepreneurship rounds. Our students certainly made us proud!”

Mrs. Shelly Cox said, “The Econ games provided a unique opportunity for our students to compete and to put into practice the critical thinking skills that we teach in our classrooms. I was so proud to see them put their knowledge and skills into practice. Our fourth grade team is already talking about going back next year!”
