Wacona Elementary WINGS Students Collaborate with African Counterparts

Mrs. Jennifer Cone’s third through fifth grade WINGS classes developed global competency through a partnership with a classroom in Lilongwe, Malawi, Africa. During a six-week partner exchange, both groups of students participated in hands-on engineering and invention activities from Design Squad Global. Along the way, both classrooms shared information about themselves, their countries, and the engineering activities they completed. This special opportunity allowed students to exercise their imagination and problem-solving skills to create designs, while learning to consider many solutions rather than one right answer. In the pictured challenge, students were asked to design a device that could launch a ping pong ball and hit a specified target. Students were supplied with paint stirrers, duct tape, a small paper cup, and a 20oz plastic bottle.
