Waycross Middle School Band Director, Mrs. Brooke Richardson, is proud to announce that for a third year in a row, musicians from the Waycross Middle School Band were selected to participate in the All-Region Band that will take place in Valdosta in April 2017.
Selected on trumpet, Kate H. is an all-A Honor Roll student and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Kate received a first place ribbon at the local Science Fair this year, and she participated in the Junior Youth Assembly.
Selected on horn, Mac S. is an all-A/B Honor Roll student and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Mac received a first place ribbon at the Science Fair this year and a third place ribbon at the district science fair, which qualified him to compete at the state level science fair. He also participated in the Junior Youth Assembly.
Both students have been in the Waycross Middle School Band since 6th grade. During their time as Bulldog Band members, they have been selected to participate in 6th-grade Honor Band in May 2016 and 7th-Grade Sousa Band in November 2016. Both Kate and Mac attended the Florida State University Band Camp during Summer 2016 and received great remarks from this event. The musicians joined hundreds of students from other districts that audition for a place in one of the two district bands and for a chance to make the All-State Band.
Kate received 7th chair this year in the top band--Honor Band--for the district after auditioning in December 2016. Mac received 2nd chair in Honor Band as well. After auditioning, both Kate and Mac were selected to move on to round two of the All-State auditions. They were the only two middle school students from the Ware County School System to receive this honor.
After the second round of auditions, both fell short of the All-State requirements, but Kate was then selected as 9th Chair in the All-Region Band, and Mac was selected as 5th Chair. All-Region Band is determined by the scores received at the second round of All-State and chosen from students who auditioned south of Macon at the 2nd round of All-State. It is very difficult for a 7th grader to accomplish the task of making All-Region Band. Kate and Mac are the first 7th graders in Mrs. Richardson’s career at Waycross Middle School to have this honor.
Mrs. Richardson expects to see great things from both of these students in the future, and she is very proud of Kate and Mac’s accomplishments this year in the “Dawg Band.” She continues to encourage students to take part in these auditions and events throughout each year.
