Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, Ruskin Elementary’s Nutrition workers have been competing in the Georgia School Nutrition Association Culinary Arts competitions. They recently competed in the category of New & Unique Lunch Entrée. For this category they had to create an entrée that is "the only one of its kind; unlike anything else." The group drew upon the expertise of each member and together developed a unique dish that they named "Cheesy BBQ Mashed Potatoes".
The dish is a spin- off of the idea of the breakfast in a bowl dishes in which a bowl is filled with several complementing foods to make one complete meal. The ladies did what they do best and collaborated to find just the right ingredients for their lunch bowl. Their winning dish was a bowl filled with creamy mashed potatoes, saucy barbeque meat, and topped with shredded cheddar cheese. The group has won the local and the regional district competition and is now headed to the state competition in Conyers.
The purpose of the Georgia School Nutrition Culinary Arts Competition is to recognize and enhance culinary skills of school nutrition professionals, to improve the quality of food products served to our customers (Georgia’s students and teachers), and to develop and provide tested, standardized recipes that are acceptable to our customers.
Principal Solomon expressed her appreciation for these ladies hard work in her statement, "Our nutrition workers provide healthy meals for our students and staff, work seamlessly as a team and they genuinely take pride in what they are doing."
