Ware County School System Announces Additional Safety Measures for 2018-2019 School Year

The Ware County School System is dedicated to the safety and welfare of all students, staff, and visitors. In recent years, the district has initiated numerous safety protocols and procedures to strengthen campus security throughout the district. Additional safety measures will be implemented in the 2018-2019 school year.

The most immediate change noted in the coming school year will be a new practice of allowing students to carry only clear or mesh backpacks and approved equipment bags. Oversized bags of any kind will not be permitted. The policy will apply to all students in grades PK-12, except Ware County Learning Center students, who are not permitted to bring a bag of any kind to school.

“Although we know that building positive relationships with students and the community is the most important security measure,” said Superintendent Jim L. LeBrun, “we believe this backpack policy is an important component of our proactive safety plan.”

The district will provide one approved mesh backpack containing a small assortment of school supplies to each PK-12 student, except those enrolled at Ware County Learning Center. Any additional backpacks beyond the first one provided must be purchased by parents. District officials have reached out to local businesses to request that clear or mesh backpacks be made available for sale, should parents wish to select a different style or color.

Other additions to school safety will include installing security cameras at all school facilities and placing a School Resource Officer at each school in the district.

LeBrun emphasized to parents and visitors that safety measures are intended to provide the safest learning environments possible. “I understand that some will believe this to be an inconvenience or invasion of privacy. However, I am willing to accept the inconvenience if it protects the safety of 7000-plus students and staff.”

Parents are encouraged to read the Ware County Schools Backpack Policy Frequently Asked Questions or email system officials at feedback@ware.k12.ga.us for more information.
