Wacona Elementary 5th Graders are Walking Petri Dishes

Wacona Elementary 5th graders are studying the harmful effects of microorganisms on larger organisms. To give the students a better understanding of the standard, Mr. Jeffrey McCarthy took swabs of several students’ mouths, hands, feet, and even armpits. Students placed the samples in petri dishes and let them grow in an incubator. Like magic, a couple of days later the petri dishes were filled with microbial colonies. The students thoroughly enjoyed seeing the bacteria that were growing on their bodies as well as discussing the difference between harmful and non-harmful bacteria. Needless to say, the armpit samples displayed the most growth and were quite pungent. Mr. John Chancey is the principal of Wacona Elementary School.

The students in the photograph are listed as follows; (front row L to R) Arias P., Jabari B., Keegan C.; (back row L to R) Amanda K., Story F., Delaney J., Bailey C., Dae’Quandra W.
